How to reconcile a matched bet after it settles

A calm post-settlement checklist for checking bookmaker and exchange results, handling voids, and keeping your matched betting records accurate.

Placing both sides of a matched bet is only half the record-keeping job. Once the event settles, compare the actual bookmaker and exchange results with the planned position before moving on to the next offer.

Start with the original position

Open the saved bet and check the selection, event, back stake, lay stake, liability, odds and commission assumption. Confirm that the event has actually settled rather than being postponed, partially settled or still showing as open at one account.

Do not overwrite the original calculation when something differs. Keep the planned values visible and record the actual result separately so the difference can be explained.

Check both sides independently

  1. Check the bookmaker's settlement, return and balance movement.
  2. Check the exchange's settlement, commission and balance movement.
  3. Confirm whether the back side or lay side won, or whether the bet was void.
  4. Compare the combined result with the planned outcome.
  5. Update the bet status and add a short note for anything unusual.

A winning back bet and a losing lay bet should be evaluated together, as should a losing back bet and a winning lay bet. Looking at only one account can make a normal matched result look like a loss or a duplicate win.

Handle exceptions deliberately

Voids, postponed events, dead heats, non-runners, partial cash-outs and rejected bets may not follow the original calculation. Check the bookmaker and exchange rules, then record what each account actually did. If one side was accepted and the other was not, pause before placing another bet because the position may no longer be covered.

Unexpected commission, a changed lay price, a missing return or a balance that does not move as expected deserves an account-level check. Save screenshots or settlement references while they are available.

Reconcile the balances after the bet

Update the bookmaker and exchange balances, then check the amount of cash committed to any other open positions. Keep deposits, withdrawals and transfers separate from the bet result. The tracking guide explains why a single account total is not the same as realised profit.

Gubbed.fyi's bet ledger is designed to keep the two sides, settlement status and result together. A five-minute close-down routine is usually safer than allowing several unsettled positions to accumulate.

Pause when the record does not reconcile: do not compensate for an unexplained difference by placing another bet or depositing more money. Find the missing settlement or movement first.
